The mix-up starts at the plug
I keep bumping into the same hallway argument: a plug showed up in an app, so it must be Matter, so it must be certified. That is three claims glued together with hope. DarkMatterDB is built on a colder split. CSA’s public Matter list is the catalog of record here, and certified is not a synonym for listed.
If you are buying a lock, a color light, or a Thread plug this week, that split is the whole job. Certified means CSA recorded a certified Matter software version for the product. Listed means the model is on the list without that record. I will live with a listed device in a lab. I will not call it certified so a shopping cart feels nicer.
This is not a vibe check, and it is not “it showed up in Apple Home, so it counts.” Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and Home Assistant are where you commission hardware. CSA is where this directory reads identity and certification. Mixing those layers is how people buy the wrong brick.
What certified actually records
CSA certified is a narrow sentence. CSA recorded a certified Matter software version for that product. Certificate ids show up on a card when CSA’s list includes them. The directory copies those facts. It does not promote them into a lab report, a retail ranking, or a promise that every hub on your shelf was tested with this exact SKU.
That still matters if you care about Matter as a protocol instead of as a marketing noun. A certified software version is the record shops keep pointing at when they say a device is Matter-certified. Without it, you may still have a real product on CSA’s list. You just do not have that record.
When a card says certified, you can treat pairing as Matter in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and Home Assistant as the intended path. That is the certified reading, labeled as what CSA recorded, not as a test I ran on your particular firmware on a Tuesday.
Listed is on the list. It is not a spare certified.
Listed means the product is on CSA’s public Matter list without a certified Matter software version on record. Uncertified listings stay visible so you can see what CSA actually published. Do not call them Matter-certified. Revoked software versions are a separate label when they show up.
People want listed to mean “works, just unsigned.” It does not mean that. It does not mean the device failed a test in my hallway. It means the certification record this site uses is not there. If your shopping rule is “Matter in four ecosystems, certified software version on file,” listed is the pile you skip. If your rule is “I want to see everything CSA published for this model line,” listed is still a row you should be allowed to read.
How to use the split without turning it into folklore
Search by name and brand. Filter by device type. Filter by Thread or Wi-Fi when CSA recorded a transport. Then filter by certification. That last click is the one people forget because the Matter logo already felt like a decision.
Not sure of the model? Answer a few questions and we will show matching hardware from the directory. I am not going to pretend the wizard knows your drywall. It knows the same CSA list the rest of the site uses.
